Scope:

Key Area:

In response to increasing global demand for enhancing energy efficiency, reducing resource consumption and restoring our relationship with nature, the European Union is set to revamp its products policy by making sustainable products the norm, as announced in the Circular Economy Action Plan and as part of the European Green Deal.

The Sustainable Products Initiative (SPI) package aims to make every aspect of the design, production, use and sale of products placed on the EU market more environmentally-friendly and circular to deliver on the sustainability and climate objectives. The proposals of the package will introduce a new era where sustainable products become the norm as well as Europe's resource independence.

With the existing Ecodesign framework at the core of the EU's sustainable policy framework, the legislative initiative entails the proposal for a Regulation on Ecodesign for Sustainable Products (ESPR), expanding its scope beyond energy related products, establishing sustainability performance and information requirements on a wide range of products, and introducing Digital Product Passports as well as labelling. The Sustainable Products Initiative will be developed in conjunction with other policies and will draw on several other legislative proposals as part of the Circular Economy Action Plan.
