More sustainable forest management
In Latvia, a project developed by the Ministry of Agriculture (in cooperation with private investment) seeks to improve biomass production in the country’s forests. More than half of Latvia's surface area is made up of forests, yet not all privately owned woods are properly managed. This results in unused biomass potential. The project therefore aims to cover the costs of reforesting untended areas, enabling the production of sustainable biomass.
Main activity field:
- The project has increased biomass from Latvian forests by 30%
- The project facilitates the management of privately-owned forest areas, which are a significant part of Latvia's surface area
- 3400 ha of private forests have been improved over a 3-year period
- Raising awareness about sustainable biomass production.
