Solar Foods, a Finnish foodtech company, produces natural single-cell proteins using simply renewable electricity and thin air, called Solein®. It brings to the market an entirely new kind of food that is both natural, and not dependent on agriculture, climate or the weather.
The protein can be made in tough environmental conditions, such as the desert, the Arctic, or, possibly, even in space. In its bioprocess, the company collects microbes from pure Finnish nature and grows them in a fermenter similar to the ones used in breweries and wineries. Through the process, it captures carbon dioxide and uses renewable electricity to grow a microbe high in protein. The protein is comparable to well-known proteins found in soybean and beef.
The company aims to be fully operational by the end of 2022, hoping to build a factory that can provide 5 million meals per year.
