The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) recycling industry is in urgent need of an efficient and low cost Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) recycling process to help them comply with the WEEE Directive. Votechnik has filled the gap in this market with a fully automated, high through-put technology designed to meet the recycling rates.

Within the REVOLV project, Votechnik have developed a technology and corresponding machine for the depollution of LCD displays, which uses state-of-the-art robotics for automated recycling. The machine quickly and safely removes components containing hazardous substances from the LCDs, such as mercury-containing lamps, and prepares the separate parts of the non-hazardous materials for recycling. These include critical raw materials like indium or valuable plastics.

The ALR 4000 machine automatically depollutes LCD screens of the liquid crystal glass panel component and the CCFL Hg-containing backlighting. The machine can disassemble and at the same time depollute 60 LCD screens per hour.

This ALR technology is currently being demonstrated at KMK Recycling ltd in Ireland and replicated for installation at three sites in the EU and USA, with its modular design enabling further scalability as well.
