Snøhetta’s S-1500 chair shows how plastic waste from Norway’s fish farming industry can be transformed into a sustainable design object with an expected lifetime of at least 50 years. The materials used in the production of the chair are provided by local fish farming companies like Kvarøy Fiskeoppdrett and Nova Sea, that supply Nordic Comfort Products (NCP) with worn-out fish nets, ropes and pipes from their fish farming activities.

Once these components are worn out, they can be collected, processed and subsequently ground into a granulate that can be injected into formwork, thus generating endless possibilities for developing new objects. In this way, the project contributes to building a local, circular economy, as it employs plastic waste from the local industry in Helgeland, in the northern part of Norway, where both the NCP's office and production are located. NCP manufactures and sells furniture for public environments and private homes.
