Refit Cotton - creative reuse to make paper from the world of fashion
Refit Cotton, launched in 2019, is an innovative sustainable material, inspired by the world of fashion, which takes fibres from industrial yarn and textile processing for use in paper production. It is developed according to circular economy principles. Favini takes waste product from cotton textile manufacturing processes, often left as fluff on the side of the machine, and after a special treatment introduces it into the pulp that is used to make Refit.
Generally, these cotton processing residues are sent for use as sound-absorbing material or asphalt fillers, which results in a durable product but one that is neither recyclable nor biodegradable - and most of it is largely destined for disposal to landfill. Favini has found a way to creatively reuse these cotton residues in paper production.
Refit Cotton is a 100% recyclable and biodegradable ecological paper, which is printable and convertible, creating an excellent high-quality paper.
- Refit comprises 15% of fibres from by-products of cotton textile processing, 40% of FSC-certified post-consumer recycled fibres and 45% of certified virgin wood pulp fibres.
- The production uses EKOenergy.
- The textile by-products used are of Italian origin. They come from the spinning of cotton and do not require the use of additional chemicals.
- The transformation process of cotton by-products into an alternative raw material for the production of paper involves a simple mechanical processing: fraying and cutting the fibres.
- The cotton residues visible on the paper's surface give the paper a distinctive look and a soft tactile effect, enhancing the end product by using the intrinsic characteristics of the by-products of cotton.
