Schijvens: Circular corporate fashion
Schijvens has been in the uniform-making business for one and a half centuries. In 2017, it went circular: it began collecting customers' old clothing, shredding it and mixing the textile fibres with shredded PET-polyester ones from sportswear, fishing nets and bottles.
The first milestone was launching a circular collection for customer Stayokay by producing post-consumer uniforms consisting of 50% pre-worn textiles mixed with 50% recycled polyester. Nowadays, they have a number of big Dutch customers, such as Kruidvat, Etos, Hema, Circl (ABN Amro) and NS Retail and are expanding outside the Netherlands to international retailers with a sustainable mindset.
Their circular process includes the whole value chain: from customer, return logistics (in cooperation with PostNL) and recycle partner to the recycled yarn spinner, weaver, knitter, sewing facility and transport company.
- In 2018, Schijvens won the Dutch Corporate Fashion Award.
- In 2020, it was the winner of the Dutch Circular Award in the Business category.
- Today, 70% of Schijvens’ whole turnover is circular.
