As the Horizon 2020 research program becomes Horizon Europe, what better time to witness how great ideas turned into real projects? LOOPS is the opportunity to show what cutting-edge research has been produced, and which changes it can bring to our communities.

For those who are not familiar with it, LOOPS is a live webinar series committed to spotlighting innovation in the field of circular economy. The topic of this episode will be bio-based resins and coatings, processed by two Horizon 2020 projects, Lignicoat and TomaPaint EUROPE.

The Lignicoat project proposes the development of eco-innovative materials from lignocellulosic biomass in order to obtain bio-based sustainable coatings considering the availability and carbon footprint of resources. Lignin is an underutilized product with a high potential to provide not only economic returns, but also environmental benefits if value-added applications are found.

In the case of TomaPaint, the bio-coating is obtained from industrial tomato processing by-products (mainly skins). The bio-resin will be the main component of a bio-lacquer, intended for the application on the internal and external surfaces of the metal cans for foodstuffs in substitution of the traditional, standard oil-based lacquers. The starting material is cutin, a component of the cuticle of the tomato peels.
