This online event of the UN Fashion Alliance on 5 February 2024 at 14:00 - 17:00 CET will discuss the role of municipalities in promoting circularity and more sustainable consumption patterns in the fashion sector.

Sustainable fashion is often regarded as an issue to be tackled at international level, thus neglecting the role of local municipalities in the phenomena of overproduction and overconsumption and their trickle-down effects. Yet many cities around the world have started to dwell upon this challenge and to develop innovative mechanisms to reduce the volume of production and overconsumption and to support their city’s fashion sector’s transition to sustainability.

• How can municipalities reduce waste, induce sustainable consumption behaviours in their citizens and promote sustainable choices and circular business services (such as rental and repair)?
• Do municipalities - at the receiving end of fast fashion - initiate policies and initiatives to re-address the phenomenon?
• Can cities impact the fashion industry by changing the consumption patterns of their citizens?

This discussion with experts and stakeholders from various global cities (Amsterdam, Oslo, Accra, Geneva, Cape Town and New York) and specialized organisations (Global Fashion Agenda, Rummage, Sojo, Patagonia, Orange Fiber and Once More) will shed light on some of these questions, providing a comprehensive picture of the current situation and the relevance of municipalities in addressing it.
