Neue Effizienz

Neue Effizienz is an institution for knowledge transfer and research in the area of energy and resource efficiency based in Wuppertal, Germany. As a regional association, it is funded by the municipalities, public utilities and regional economic development institutions of Wuppertal, Solingen and Remscheid.

Neue Effizienz promotes innovation as well as science and technology transfer in the fields of energy, circular economy, new mobility and smart cities. bergisch.metall, a competence network for the metal industry, fouses on the circular economy; the bergisch.circular project assists the municipalities with the establishment of intermunicipal structures and initiatives supporting the circular transformation.

Going Green - CARE INNOVATION 2023

Going Green – CARE INNOVATION 2023 will provide a platform for presenting up-to-date progress on the circular economy and the development of resource-efficient electr(on)ic products and services.

This international symposium on 8-11 May 2023 will compare the three major economic regions - Europe, America and Asia - in the presence of high-level speakers from global electr(on)ic and recycling companies, research institutes and environmental & consumer organisations.

Leading industrialists, research directors, environmental experts and scientists will analyse the state of play regarding:

  • producer responsibility
  • environmentally-friendly electr(on)ic & automotive product development
  • resource scarcity and criticality
  • clean production, green marketing, logistics and end-of-life strategies.

Through a wide range of presentations, the contribution of the electr(on)ic & automotive industry to sustainable development in general will be discussed, and the necessary products, technologies and services will be identified.

The Lithuanian Commune DIY, a team of skateboarding professionals and enthusiasts, collects old, broken Canadian maple hardwood skateboards that have lost their original purpose and recycles them 100 %. The new products made of skateboards are sustainable, strong and have a new life span which is longer than the one of an average skateboard deck.

For this purpose, they have designed reusable packaging made of recycled polypropylene, which contains a proportion of collected plastic from the North Sea. Their product can be used 20 times more often than conventional cardboard packaging.

CIMPA: making multilayer plastic films circular

Circular Buildings: constructing a sustainable future is the latest addition to a series of publications from Holland Circular Hotspot about circular challenges and opportunities in different sectors including infrastructure, plastics, manufacturing and textiles and apparel industries.

It explores how circular economy concepts can help tackle challenges in the building sector, supporting the transition towards a more sustainable and futureproof industry. It provides 25 good practices from the construction value chain and offers a framework for an international shift towards circular construction comprising policies, measurement standards, collaboration initiatives and knowledge exchange.

SUSMAGPRO

In the frame of the Leiden European City of Science Festival, the H2020 project SUSMAGPRO will be showcased in an interactive exhibition on campus at the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) on 7 June 2022. Interested visitors can learn all about rare earth magnets, why they are essential to our modern lives, the challenges connected to them and which solutions SUSMAGPRO provides.

In addition to an interactive exhibition and hands-on activities, the team of project partner Leiden University have prepared exciting lectures on the topic and visitors will have the opportunity to see one of the SUSMAGPRO pilots in action: the automated, mobile sensing line to separate Rare Earth magnets from WEEE.

LIFE CIRC-ELV Project: channelling plastic from end-of-life vehicles back into the manufacturing chain

The LIFE CIRC-ELV project has developed a new process for managing end-of-life vehicles to recover bumpers and fuel tanks, recycle the materials and use them to manufacture pipes and new parts for vehicles. Using this recycled plastic in products from this industry and others will help reduce the carbon footprint by 85%.
