Glass is great for washing, refilling and reusing, and reuse systems make the most of these qualities. Unfortunately, each country or industry approaches them differently. The EU-funded Interpool project, a consortium of 14 partners from France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, aims to help advance cross-border reuse systems for glass packaging. 

It will work with actors across the product's lifecycle to enable cross-country alignment of reuse systems. Packaging can then be jointly circulated, collected, cleaned and reused, making glass reuse more cost effective and environmentally friendly across the region. This harmonisation of infrastructure and processes can reduce complexity, lower waste management costs and increase scale across the countries involved.

The project aims to mobilise and coordinate a pool of experts who will provide recommendations and hands-on experience. This input will help build a roadmap for Europe-wide glass packaging reuse systems.

The pool's mandate runs until 30 June 2029. It will provide input and feedback on:

• Joint Pilots Implementation Plan 
• Pilot A: testing the enabling conditions of the reuse systems 
• Pilot B: testing the transnational reuse loop 

The experts may also need to review and provide feedback on: 

• Policy strategy on reuse implementation for policymakers 
• Scale-up action plan on reuse systems
