Paques Biomaterials: scaling up production of biopolymers made from organic waste
Paques Biomaterials is a Dutch company working on producing natural alternatives to plastic from renewable resources. Their biodegradable PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) biopolymers are made using circular feedstocks and mixed culture technology.
Their process converts organic residual streams like industrial wastewater and solid organic wastes into high-quality, fully biodegradable biopolymers branded as Caleyda®. The company aims to scale production globally and support a circular bioeconomy.
It has successfully demonstrated scalable production of biodegradable PHA polymers from organic waste streams. Their Caleyda® biopolymer is fully biodegradable in natural environments and supports circular economy principles by converting waste into valuable materials that can re-enter biological cycles. The polymers are customisable for multiple uses, enabling substitution of fossil-based plastics with renewable, compostable alternatives.
Paques Biomaterials has been learning and scaling up for a decade. The PHA biomass full-scale plant is being developed in 2026, producing biomass to be processed into products or Caleyda® in a full-scale PHA extraction plant.
PHA polymers are made from organic waste using mixed bacterial cultures that use the polymer as food reserve and can accumulate PHA up to 90% of their cell weight.
In August 2026, Caleyda® was used to make biodegradable cups for festivals, in a partnership between Paques Biomaterials, Happy Cups and H&P Moulding.
