Description

As provided for in the Platform's rules of procedure, members of the Coordination group are selected through an open call for expression of interest for a 2.5-year mandate. The second call took place over summer 2020 and the renewed Coordination group was selected in early November 2020.

The first meeting of the newly-selected ECESP Coordination Group was held on 18 November 2020. Bringing together the 24 Members and the institutions supporting the ECESP, a lively debate was held on the plans for the new CG to steer the Platform and foster the debate among the Circular Economy community.

  • Introducing themselves to each other for the first time, the 24 Members presented what they bring to the Coordination Group, with the Chair highlighting the Platform's collaborative spirit and the new formats being used (such as Leadership Groups and EU Circular Talks) which enabled CG members and stakeholders to engage in discussion.
  • Virginijus Sinkevičius, the European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries greeted the Group with a video message, emphasizing that at this difficult time it was important to create growth and jobs and to remain globally competitive by means of the circular economy.
  • Cillian Lohan, EESC vice-president for Communication, presented the EESC's role in the Platform, outlining that together with Anders Ladefoged and Maria Nikolopoulou they represent the EESC's three Groups on the ECESP. Two institutional stakeholders also participated in the meeting: Pia Nieminen from the European Investment Bank said that the Bank was committed to the Green Deal and the circular economy, and Almut Reichel representing the European Environment Agency, for whom the circular economy is a priority.
  • Welcoming the 2 candidates for CG Chair, the Coordination Group shared messages of support for Ladeja Godina Košir (Circular Change) and Freek van Eijk (Holland Circular Hotspot) as Chair for the coming 2.5 year mandate, with the former leading for the first half and the latter for the second.
