Call to include nutrients in the EU Circular Economy Act

There are mixed signals as to whether or not the Circular Economy Act will address nutrients and biological origin material. At political level, inclusion of phosphorus in the CEA seems confirmed. At technical level, however, it seems that only technical materials (such as plastics, demolition waste and textiles) are being considered. Circularity of organic-containing materials from biological processes, organic waste or the bioeconomy are not, meaning that most secondary nutrients are not being taken into consideration.

Policy measures designed for recycling technical materials may not be suitable for organic-containing waste which poses specific challenges for food chain safety and confidence.

The European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform has launched a Joint Call asking that the EU Circular Economy Act be “ambitious for nutrients, to forward sustainability, EU job creation and competitivity, and food system resilience” and suggesting 20 policy proposals.

The Joint Call has been signed by over 40 organisations. If your company/organisation has not already signed the Joint Call and you feel that nutrients should be included in the CEA, contact the ESPP before 10 June to be included!
