AFYREN: manufacturing industrial molecules from sugar beet by-products
AFYREN is a French green chemistry company that develops and industrialises biobased, low-carbon organic acids using a proprietary fermentation technology based on natural microorganisms.
It replaces petroleum-derived chemicals with renewable alternatives produced from sugar industry by-products. The company operates a zero industrial waste model in which all process outputs are recovered: the organic acids are used as sustainable ingredients across multiple industries, while fermentation residues are returned to the soil as fertiliser, closing the biological nutrient loop. It also minimises resource use through closed-loop water recycling, local sourcing of feedstocks and proximity to its end markets, and energy-efficient production processes.
At its AFYREN NEOXY plant, the company manufactures seven organic acids. They are biobased drop-ins, molecules that can simply replace petroleum-based ones in food, feed, flavours and fragrances, life sciences, materials and lubricants.
According to AFYREN, its biobased production process reduces the carbon footprint of its products by up to five times compared with petroleum-based alternatives while embedding circularity, resource efficiency and biodiversity protection throughout its value chain.
