Scope

Industrial symbiosis supports circular economies through resource exchange – but information asymmetries, fragmented networks and coordination challenges are a problem.

This study synthesises the literature and examines five industrial symbiosis initiatives with varying levels of digital maturity and 5 interconnected capabilities, including knowledge discovery, ecosystem orchestration, resource matching, resource-exchange facilitation and value-chain integration.

It proposes an agentic industrial symbiosis framework that conceptualises how AI enabled capabilities could support resource orchestration that advance the circular eonomy and industrial symbiosis. It offers novel theoretical and practical implications for circular innovation and provides a foundation for future empirical research.
