The textile industry represents a crucial sector of the Italian economy. The adoption of production models based on Circular Economy principles would allow this sector to become not only more sustainable, but also more resilient, efficient, and profitable. In the Circular Threads event on 22 June 2021, Tondo will present the study they have conducted on this topic. This study was based on a three level analysis (desk search, questionnaire, circularity measurement), which provided an overview of the current situation, with the ultimate goal of understanding the existing gaps and accelerating the transition to a circular economy in the textile sector, also identifying some of the best practices implemented and the main challenges to be faced to facilitate the transition.

The event will be divided into five parts:

  1. Introduction on the new trends on sustainability and circularity in the textile and fashion industry with experts from the sector.
  2. Presentation of the strategies of local companies: Successori Reda, Vitale Barberis Canonico, and Fratelli Piacenza will illustrate the sustainability and circularity projects they have implemented.
  3.  Analysis of the state of the circular economy and sustainability in the textile sector through the presentation of the study developed by Tondo.
  4. Analysis of circularity with respect to two case studies: the Graphi-Tee T-shirt by Wrad and the Supernova and Ecotec yarn by Marchi & Fildi.
  5. Discussion on the actions and levers that can support the circular transition in textiles, with the participation of Unione Industriale Biellese, Sistema Moda Italia, Associazione Tessile e Salute, Ren, UNECE and Fondazione Pistoletto.

The event will also include a workshop, organised with the aim of improving the knowledge of circular economy practices in the textile sector with a focus on Suppliers, Materials and Products, Waste Management. The workshop will have a first theoretical part, during which some examples will be analysed of companies that have managed to implement circular practices, and a second part in which participants will be divided into groups of 4-5 people to understand how to outline possible projects for their reality.
