Ecobraz's Adote um Bairro (Adopt a Neighborhood) programme
Ecobraz is a Brazilian socio-environmental organisation with 16 years' experience in electronic waste management. It currently serves as the operational arm for several subsidiaries of European multinationals operating in Brazil. It runs a programme specifically designed to help companies whose headquarters are in Europe meet the requirements of the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.
The "Adote um Bairro" (Adopt a Neighborhood) programme is an innovative ESG sponsorship model designed for large corporations. Unlike traditional carbon offset projects like tree planting, which take years to show results, this model provides immediate, verifiable and auditable environmental impact. By subsidising door-to-door e-waste collection through sponsorship quotas, the programme ensures that toxic materials are diverted from landfills right now.
This project directly supports the circular economy by returning valuable materials to the supply chain and helps European companies comply with emerging sustainability regulations (CSDDD) through transparent and documented operations in São Paulo, Brazil. It ensures that European value chains maintain the same environmental standards in South America as they do in Europe.
The programme provides an immediate and auditable alternative to traditional ESG actions.
Key results include:
- Direct diversion of hazardous electronic waste from urban landfills through sponsored door-to-door collection,
- Real-time environmental impact metrics, offering sponsors verifiable data for their ESG reports (addressing CSDDD requirements),
- Returning materials to the local circular economy.
- Unlike carbon offset projects like tree planting, which have long-term and uncertain outcomes, these sponsorship quotas deliver immediate place-based impact, fostering social and environmental responsibility in the communities where sponsoring companies operate.
