Summary of the pledge
Being engaged in enhancing plastics’ recycling rates across the EU since 1996, PRE is willing to commit that its members would put on the EU market 10 million tonnes of recycled plastics each year if certain conditions and legislative measures are put in place.
  1. Design for recycling for plastic products
  2. Increased quality collection and sorting
  3. Financial incentives
These three preconditions are indispensable to guarantee proper collection of quality waste. They will ensure production of high value final products, increase a stable demand for recyclates and enable the transition towards the circular economy model. Development of common practices and standards across the industry have a major, positive impact on the improvement of manufacturing of plastics and on its waste management in Europe. These measures must be additionally accompanied by campaigns at the EU level promoting the environmental, social and economic benefits of using recycled plastics among citizens and consumers. Green public procurement is an important tool to promote the use of recycled content through public tenders, at the EU, Member State (MS), and regional level. The use of products made from recycled materials should be binding in these public tenders and any use of products without recyclates must be justified. The success and the efficiency of the above-mentioned measures will be secured via harmonization as well as through their adequate implementation and enforcement at the MS.
