Summary of the pledge
Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS) is the joint industry initiative to significantly increase the circularity of styrenics.
To jump-start the recycling rates of post-consumer styrenics, SCS builds on PS’ unique intrinsic capacity for circularity, as it can be recycled back into its constituent monomer or dissolved producing a high yield of premium recycled PS (rPS).
Plastic-to-plastic recycling technologies like depolymerisation, dissolution and others will enable rPS to be used over and over again in its original applications, including food contact. SCS will dramatically increase and accelerate the commercial use of game-changing recycling technologies. SCS engages with waste collection and sorting partners to drive more PS waste to high-tech recycling. As a holistic initiative across and along multiple styrenics value chains (PS, EPS, XPS etc.). SCS will also closely cooperate with other stakeholders to accelerate the industry’s efforts to maximise the circularity of styrenics.

SCS commits to the following roadmap:
- 2018: Appointment of Secretary General and incorporation as independent organisation, completion and analysis of feasibility studies; PS waste and recycling study; sorting study in Germany
- 2019: Pilot trials of sorting and cleaning technologies on industrial scale plants; selection of recycling technologies
- 2020: Demo plants in place & commercial trials • 2021-2025: Scale-up implementation in line with the EU Plastics Strategy
