Scope

This workshop will explore how sustainable urban development can unite environmental responsibility, economic resilience and social well-being, transforming cities into ecosystems that regenerate rather than deplete.

By using locally sourced recycled materials, cities minimise transportation emissions and support regional economies. Infrastructure built with recycled tyre materials offers durability, flexibility and lower maintenance costs, while also enabling modular upgrades and end-of-life recyclability. Sustainable urban cities also embed green infrastructure — such as permeable pavements and urban gardens — into their design, enhancing climate resilience and biodiversity. Combined with smart mobility systems, renewable energy integration and inclusive public spaces, these cities become living ecosystems that regenerate rather than deplete.

At the heart of this transformation lies the strategic use of recycled materials in infrastructure — turning waste into assets and carbon footprints into climate solutions. These cities prioritise circular construction practices, where materials like recycled thermoplastics, reclaimed asphalt, crushed concrete and repurposed metals are integrated into roads, pavements, bike lanes, public furniture and drainage systems. This not only diverts waste from landfills but also drastically reduces the embodied carbon of urban development.

This event is organised by the RE-PLAN CITY LIFE project (RElevant Audience Plan Leading to Awareness Network for CIrcular Economy Use of Recycled TYre materials in CITY LIFE), with the Region of Crete and the Region of Crete European Projects.

It will be in English and in person only, and take place at 18:30–20:30 on 6 November. Register here and tick '6 November' only: the other parts of the two-day event are open to project partners only.
