Description

ReKáva gives spent coffee grounds a second life by creating local circular solutions for this valuable organic by-product. The company collects used coffee grounds from cafés, companies and institutions in Prague and redirects them into new uses, preventing them from becoming mixed municipal waste and helping close the natural cycle of coffee.

ReKáva implements circular economy practices through two main activities. First, its collection service places Smart Bins, which monitor the quality of the grounds and warn when the bin is getting full, in partner organisations. The coffee grounds collected are transported by electric cargo bike to community gardens, where they are composted and used by local gardeners. Second, its Growkit enables households and offices to grow oyster mushrooms directly from coffee grounds, encouraging people to view waste as a valuable resource.

The initiative shows that coffee grounds can return to natural cycles instead of being discarded, supporting soil regeneration, community gardening and more sustainable urban waste management. The company’s message — that “coffee is not the end, coffee is the beginning” — reflects its ambition to change perceptions of waste and promote everyday participation in circular economy solutions.
