Summary of the pledge
European plastic strategy places importance on curbing plastic waste and littering as well as on innovation towards circular solutions where biodegradable and compostable plastics are mentioned in relation to the former aspect, namely curbing plastic waste and littering, whereas innovation on materials that fully biodegrade in seawater and freshwater is mentioned in the context of the latter aspect, namely innovation toward circular solutions.

Kaneka Belgium would like to pledge to provide European market with 60 000 tons through 2025 of the innovative biodegradable polymer named PHBHTM, which has been certified as home-compostable, soil biodegradable, and marine biodegradable by an independent certification body named TÜV, for food packaging applications which are
  • difficult to recycle in a mechanical way due to high contamination level,
  • can be fully recovered into organic fertilizer products via organic recycling, and
  • biodegrades in marine environment in case of accidental losses.
We believe PHBHTM coupled with the establishment of clear labeling/marking for consumers and adequate waste collection and treatment system as prerequisite would contribute to the achievement of the European plastic strategy. With this pledge, we believe that highly organic material contaminated plastic waste can by fully taken-up into valuable fertilizer products and additionally, improve the quality of other plastic waste streams, being less polluted by other (organic) substances.
