Projects under the Horizon Europe call on Diversification of nutritional food ingredient sources for increased EU resilience and strategic autonomy must look at producing more diverse and sustainable nutritional food ingredients and promoting public acceptance of them.

They must demonstrate efficient production of one or more of the following: proteins, lipids, specialty carbohydrates and fibres. The solution can include co-production of multiple and different food and feed ingredients and other bio-based products. All sources of non-direct bio-based feedstock are eligible, including residues from aquaculture, fisheries, agriculture, farming and forestry, and urban and/or industrial waste streams.

The proposals must validate the use of the ingredient(s) in at least 1 food product. Aspects such as quality and stability must be covered, and aspects related to prevention of intolerances or allergies may be covered if appropriate. The proposals must also address resource efficiency and circularity, with due regard for health and safety.

Proposals must also assess the safety of the nutritional food ingredients, identify potential EU regulatory gaps and propose recommendations to relevant EU policymakers on how to better support food ingredient companies in addressing EFSA risk assessment.

A range of actors must be involved, including with a view to fostering market acceptance.
