Scope:

With the launch of the study “Closing the loop: Maximising the Circular Economy’s Potential for the Transition to Climate-neutral Industry”, produced with the support of Material Economics, Agora quantifies the very large potential for more circular and efficient use of CO2-intensive materials like steel, cement, aluminium and plastics to reduce associated emissions in these sectors.

The study argues that a more material-efficient and circular economy is essential to make the industrial transition to clean technologies feasible by 2050. This Agora Online Event on 17 March from 9:00 to 11:00 CET brings together EU policy makers and key stakeholders from industry and recycling value chains to discuss, together with civil society representatives and the general public, what is needed from CEAP 2.0 legislation for the most CO2-intensive materials and products.

The first session will present the main findings of the study, followed by reactions from EU policy makers William Neale (Adviser on Circular Economy, DG Environment, European Commission) and Bas Eickhout MEP (ENVI Committee Vice-Chair, European Parliament). The second session will feature a round-table discussion among key industrial stakeholders.

Key questions to be addressed:

  • Why do we need to boost our circular economy policies for CO2-intensive industries?
  • What are the different circular economy levers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions? How far could they reduce emissions?
  • What policies should we prioritise under EU legislation?
