Description

Plastic waste accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between the Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies.

The non-profit organisation Ocean Cleanup aims to remove plastic waist from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and turn it into products, from which 100% of the proceeds will be reinvested in the continuation of the cleanup project.

Main results
  • Ocean Cleanup has launched sunglasses made from plastic removed from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 2019. Designed in California by Yves Béhar and made in Italy by Safilo, they’ve also been designed to be easily recycled.
  • The project has set itself the goal of cleaning the area of 500 000 football fields worth of ocean (according to October 2021 data, 65 % of the goal has been reached).
