The first and largest European online market for secondary raw materials - SECONTRADE - was launched in Austria in 2018. SECONTRADE digitalises waste management and enables the trade of recycled materials across Europe.
All secondary raw materials on offer are recovered through the processing of waste. The vendors on the platform supply the market with materials of the required quality, also providing the necessary individual certificates. This kind of digitalisation of raw material trade has the potential to accelerate the use of recycled materials and to increase the share of secondary raw materials within the European market, thus accelerating the transformation towards a circular economy.

- After three years, 26 400 tonnes of secondary raw materials have been traded by 200 users from 23 countries.
- Recycling a tonne of steel and iron scrap avoids the mining of 1.5 tonnes of iron ore, and recycling one tonne of steel scrap saves one tonne of CO2.
