Tingyi (Cayman Islands) Holding Corp., also known as Master Kong, a large food and beverage company, and the Alibaba Group are both project founding members of the Global Development Initiative for Sustainable Development Goals pilot focusing on solving ocean plastics crisis based on innovative partnership and circular economy launched by United Nations Global Compact in China in 2022.

In 2022 the Alibaba Group, along with 19 other companies, launched the Carbon Reduction Action campaign to help consumers understand carbon footprints.

Alibaba and Master Kong work with Veolia to recycle Master Kong's plastic packaging into rPET pellets. The pellets are then used to produce a new collection of goods for sale on Tmall Supermarket, an Alibaba-owned grocery purchasing platform.

Energy Expert tracks and documents the CO2 savings performance during the whole process: recycling and transportation of PET bottles, recycling, transportation of rPET materials, manufacture of rPET products, and transportation of finished products to the warehouse. Blockchain technology is used to ensure safe data processing at each stage.

The information recorded includes:

  • real-time production pictures
  • shipping order numbers
  • production batch numbers
  • other unique identification information to ensure data traceability

rPET QR code

The series of products is allocated a QR code and can be found by looking for “carbon footprint” on the Tmall webstore. Consumers can then obtain the carbon reduction footprint of the goods by scanning the QR code on the packaging. As an example, the rPET storage box reduces carbon emissions by about 21% compared to using an equivalent amount of PET plastic for production.
