The New Circularity Index (NCI) scheme is a third-party verification framework developed by the Italian certification body ICMQ. It assesses and communicates the circularity performance of products in a consistent, measurable and transparent way.

The scheme evaluates circularity by analysing the resources entering and leaving the production process, with a focus on four main areas: materials, energy, water and waste. It considers, for example, the use of recycled, reused or renewable materials, the share of energy from renewable sources, water reuse and recycling practices, as well as the recovery and recycling of waste generated during production.

Based on these data, the methodology calculates specific circularity indicators and an overall NCI, providing a quantitative representation of the product’s performance. The assessment is based on documented and traceable information and is subject to independent verification.

The NCI verification scheme enables manufacturers to measure their current circularity performance, identify areas for improvement and communicate verified results to the market. It can therefore support circular economy strategies, product development, supply-chain engagement and credible environmental claims, reducing the risk of unsubstantiated or misleading sustainability communications.
