The city as a quarry: Housing transformation
This conference will explore how renovation, reuse, changes in use and building extensions can help increase the supply of housing.
The programme links public policy and financing to built examples, including the transformation of Brussels’ Brunfaut Tower, presented by Jaime Eizaguirre of Atelier 229. There will be two roundtable discussions, where institutional representatives and leading experts will discuss strategies for transforming and renovating the existing city in response to the housing crisis and the climate emergency. The first will be on Policies for transforming housing: scale, financing and productive transition, and the second on Architectural transformation: renovation, reuse and extension of built heritage.
This event will bring together European Commission representatives, public officials and European architects. It is part of the series “Contemporary Catalan Architecture Conferences: Social Housing”, put on by the Catalan Departments of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, and European Union and External Action in connection with Barcelona's role as World Capital of Architecture 2026.
It will be held in person only at the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to the EU (Rue de la Loi 227, Brussels) at 09:00–13:30 CET on 4 November. It will be in English with no interpreting. See the programme and register.
