Workshop to gather input for the EU textile strategy: Product design for sustainability

The Circular Economy Action Plan identified textiles as a priority sector of key importance to the transition towards a more sustainable and circular economy, and announced that a comprehensive EU strategy for textiles would be developed based on input from industry and other stakeholders.

Therefore, the European Commission is organising a series of targeted stakeholder workshops to gather input on challenges and gaps as well as opportunities for the textile sector in the transition towards sustainability.

The fourth workshop on 18 June 2021 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CEST will focus on “product design for sustainability in the textile value chain”.

During the workshop, participants will be able to provide input to the European Commission on the design of textile products in support of circularity, for instance through improved durability, repairability and recyclability. In addition, the workshop will cover ‘safe by design’ of textiles, the presence of hazardous chemicals and the release of microplastics.

The workshop aims to identify key challenges and goals which can be addressed through sustainable design. Based on this, participants will be able to give their views on policy solutions at EU and national levels that can promote sustainable design and make design of sustainable textile products the norm.
