A sustainable bioeconomy requires a completely different way of producing: circular instead of linear and use of science to add value to biological resources and biological processes. With its inspiration from nature, the bioeconomy fully embraces principles of renewability, circularity and cascaded resource use. The bioeconomy and circular economy both address sustainability and seek to optimize product design, material flows and resource efficiency while keeping a high level of functionality or adding new functionalities to materials. In fact, the recognition that the bioeconomy is deeply linked with circularity has become articulated under the concept of Circular Bioeconomy.

The third Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS) organised by the International Advisory Council on Global Bioeconomy (IACGB) was held in an interactive and virtual format in November 2020. The GBS digitally brought together around 3 000 representatives from politics, science, civil society and the business sector, and from more than 50 countries, to discuss the latest developments and challenges in the global bioeconomy.

The international character of this Summit was strengthened by the guidance of five official partners, representing the European Union, Japan, the ASEAN region, Eastern Africa, and Latin America & the Caribbean.

Starting with 12 workshops and over 50 breakout sessions and culminating with 5 plenary sessions and debates, GBS2020 was a great success. The organisers have compiled a summary report of all GBS2020 content and contributions.
