Public consultation is now open on a ‘Policy framework on biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics’

The European Commission is sounding out citizens, consumers and expert stakeholders with a view to the preparation of an EU-wide policy framework for biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics.

The policy framework was announced in the EU Plastics Strategy, the European Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan. It will aim to clarify the role that biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics can play in delivering on the Commission’s commitments to a carbon-neutral and circular economy. It will help improve the understanding of the full lifecycle environmental impacts of these plastics, as well as the applications likely to be the most appropriate to deliver genuine environmental benefits as compared to conventional plastics.

The consultation is open for feedback until 15 March 2022. This feedback will be taken into account by the Commission as it prepares the policy framework on biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics, scheduled to be adopted by the Commission in the summer of 2022.
