Ecoplasteam: recycling multi-layer packaging into a polymer
Ecoplasteam recycles polylaminates into a polymer. In other words, they recycle tetrapak packaging which is made up of cellulose, plastic and aluminium and has always been a headache for recycling because it is made up of multiple layers. The traditional approach has been to treat it as unsorted rubbish (ie. landfill or incinerate it) or to separate the components – which is expensive.
Ecoplasteam's process removes the paper layer, and then melts the polyethylene and aluminium into EcoAllene®.
EcoAllene® is sold in granules. It is easy to process, offers constant technical and composition characteristics, is colourable, 100% recycled and recyclable and traceable. It is as easy for manufacturers to use as virgin plastic as there is no variation in content.
Another important feature is its constant availability, due to the large quantities of packaging waste. EcoAllene® is suitable for injection moulding, rotational moulding, blow moulding and extrusion and can be used to manufacture products employed in the automotive, construction, giftware and general tools markets. Its price is competitive as compared to that of virgin plastic.
Producing EcoAllene® is innovative because it processes multi-layer packaging waste a new secondary material. Reducing complexity reduces the cost of recycling and enables EcoAllene® to be priced competitively compared to plastic.
