LOOP-Ports: driving circularity in the port sector
The LOOP-Ports project ran from September 2018 to November 2020. It was coordinated by Fundación Valenciaport and funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) through the EIT Climate-KIC initiative. Its main goal was to facilitate the transition to a more circular economy in the port sector.
The network focused on high-emitting materials, mainly metals, plastics, cements and biomaterials. It facilitated the exchange of experience and good practices, provided policy recommendations and fostered training and new business opportunities in port clusters and related industries.
The website has an interactive port mapping tool where users can select ports using a variety of criteria, such as decommissioning and recycling of waste streams.
There is also a collection of good practices in areas such as recycling of waste streams, repair, maintenance and overhaul, and refurbishment.
The projects produced the following brochures:
- LOOP-Ports circular economy case studies;
- Mapping of EU ports: A total of 480 main ports in European Union countries were evaluated in terms of their circularity;
- Opportunities for intervention and innovation recommendations. This report identifies key system drivers and the main barriers (legislative, administrative, technological, etc.) to circular economy initiatives in this sector.
