Description

Collecting unused medicine for redistribution

The Fondazione Gigi Ghirotti has been working on the collection and redistribution of unused pharmaceutical products for a number of years now.

It has been instrumental in getting a law passed which provides a framework for the safe collection and redistribution of pharmaceutical products. The law stipulates that non-profit organisations can reuse these products provided they have been properly stored, have not yet reached their use-by date and the packaging has not been damaged. They can be dropped off at the Foundation's headquarters or various collection points across Genoa.

The pharmaceutical products collected supply the two hospices operated by Fondazione Gigi Ghirotti and cover the needs of many home treatments.

Main results
  • The initiative reduces the consumption and wastage of pharmaceuticals, thus reducing both the economic and environmental costs of their production and disposal.
  • It saves health and humanitarian NGOs and the people assisted by them from having to buy expensive medication.
