Description

There is a huge amount of electrical and electronic equipment waste being generated around the world. However, even people who are aware of this problem and more than willing to recycle can hesitate when it comes to laptops and similar devices. There are security concerns, after all: all that sensitive data which might end up in the hands of people who might use it for their own purposes...

Usody specialises in removing that data. They issue certifications for used devices which have been wiped with their software.

As well as cutting down on the mountain of WEEE being produced, this is the first step in enabling vulnerable users and groups to get access to refurbished equipment at an affordable price. This helps reduce the overall digital divide in society and creates jobs in refurbishing organisations. The practice is transferable to any region: all necessary resources (code, methodologies…) are available as free software.

Main results

Usody provides a service which is a key link in the chain of reusing IT equipment. By wiping used devices, those devices can be safely refurbished and sold on at an affordable price.

The end result is less waste, a more circular approach to IT equipment and an increase in the number of people who can afford to buy it.
