Ecomundis, a sustainability consultancy, and its RightSupply.net platform have designed a digital tool which is inspired by the Material Circularity Indicator developed by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and incorporates elements from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development's Circular Transition Indicators.

The Material Circularity Index (ICM – Índice de Circularidad de la Materia) analyses an organisation's material flows and determines what percentage of resources possesses circular potential. The result is expressed as a percentage and broken down into two variants: ICM-Local, which focuses on circularity within organisational and operational boundaries, and ICM-Global, which takes a broader lifecycle perspective. This makes it straightforward to make accurate year-on-year comparisons.

The Material Circularity Index is part of the RightCircular© toolkit which comprises:

  • the ICM calculation system,
  • the automatic generation of online circularity reports, and
  • additional AI-based research and analysis features.

It generates a circularity assessment report, evaluating multiple circularity attributes and applying a scoring system that incorporates indicators from the ISO 59000 series.

By providing a snapshot of the degree of recycling, recovery and valorisation of an organisation’s products and operations throughout their lifecycle, the Material Circularity Index represents the circularity outcomes of:

  • an organisation,
  • a specific product, or
  • an aggregated portfolio of products.

Companies contract access based on the scale of their operations and the number of products involved. The tool can be used autonomously or with the support of Ecomundis’ consulting services.
