Cities and Regions Call for Action: Circular Construction for Competitiveness, Climate and Conservation of Raw Materials
With a view to the Circular Economy Act, cities, regions and stakeholders in the waste and construction sector are calling for increased focus and ambition for circular construction in the EU. The goal is to strengthen competitiveness and strategic autonomy and deliver EU climate targets.
Initiated by the Capital Region of Denmark together with ICLEI, Île-de-France, the Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam, the City of Amsterdam, the City of Vienna and the City of Copenhagen, the European Call for Action on Circular Construction urges the EU to address key needs and potential within the construction sector as regards circularity, reuse and reduction.
Specifically, it urges the EU to preserve raw materials and strengthen secondary raw material markets by calling for EU action on:
reducing material and land consumption
creating market demand through public procurement
revising and harmonising end-of-waste criteria
supporting the competitiveness of secondary and biobased raw materials
The initiative is already supported by over 50 organisations, including cities and regions representing over 65 million Europeans.
The call can be signed by political representatives of public authorities or leaders of private organisations until the conference on 24 June. Email to indicate your interest in signing the Call for Action.
At the conference, initiators and signatories along with stakeholders from the construction and demolition sector will meet with EU decision makers to hand over the Call for Action and discuss the potential of circular construction to deliver on competitiveness, climate and conservation of raw materials.
The conference will take place at the European Committee of Regions building, Room VMA21, at 09:30-12:00 CEST on 24 June. Coffee and pastries will be served from 08:30, and the event will be followed by a networking lunch. Registration.
