The NGO Shipbreaking Platform is a global coalition of organisations working to change current shipbreaking practices.

Most European ships are sent to South Asia, primarily India and Bangladesh, when no longer useful. There, they are taken apart by hand right on the beach, with scant regard for safe working conditions or proper handling of toxic substances. The result is injury and even death for workers and damage to the environment.

The NGO Shipbreaking Platform holds a two-yearly event on Ship Recycling Lab: Transformation Through Innovation as part of its work on reversing this state of affairs. This will be the third one, focusing on boosting engagement and commitment to finance capacity building and innovation for a new standard of ship recycling.

It will bring together forward-thinking stakeholders from the maritime, recycling and steel sectors, financial institutions and policymakers. Participants will showcase and exchange ideas for good practices and strategies for ship demolition, design, waste management and material recovery, in line with ethical circular policy goals.
