Roofwander: sharing rooftop tents through peer-to-peer rental
Roofwander is a Belgian peer-to-peer marketplace enabling rooftop tent owners to rent out their equipment when they are not using it. The service operates mainly in Belgium and France, with listings also in Germany.
Rooftop tents are durable leisure products that may remain unused between holidays. Roofwander applies an access-over-ownership model: different travellers can use the same tent through successive rentals, while ownership remains with its original owner. Renters can access equipment for occasional trips or try a model before deciding whether to buy.
Owners publish prices, availability and equipment details. Renters find a nearby tent and provide travel dates and vehicle compatibility information. Owners review requests before accepting. The platform supports bookings, payments, messaging, deposits and reviews. Owners and renters coordinate collection, installation and return.
The practice aims to increase the use of existing equipment by making local sharing easier to organise. Owners earn income from an underused asset and travellers gain an alternative to buying equipment for occasional use. The approach can be replicated in other regions and applied to other durable leisure products.
Environmental outcomes depend on whether rentals replace purchases, maintenance and transport for collection. Avoided production, waste and emissions have not yet been quantified.
- By October 2026, approximately 330 owners were offering rooftop tents through Roofwander, mainly in Belgium and France, with some in Germany. More than 100 rentals had been completed by late summer 2026.
- This demonstrates an operational sharing model for durable leisure equipment. Existing tents become available to additional users, while travellers can access a tent without purchasing one. Compatibility information, booking tools, payments, deposits and reviews help make peer-to-peer rental practical.
