Closing the Loop: collecting e-waste in Africa and recovering the materials in Europe
Closing the Loop aims to help the tech industry to consume electronics in a more sustainable way. It works with the industry and builds circular models into the way companies work.
Its main service is called One for One. Their business clients use it to offset their IT devices: they pay a fee for each new device added to the market, and Closing the Loop uses the money to collect an equivalent amount of electronic waste (e-waste). It organises shipment to and responsible recycling in Europe of end-of-life devices, and the material recovered is sold on to manufacturers. They collect e-waste from Africa simply because there is a serious lack of recycling facilities there (although they are working on correcting that) and recycle it in Europe because Europe does have the facilities.
Closing the Loop works with the informal sector in countries such as Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon through its long-term collection networks. It pays a stable income to collectors for the scrap devices that are bought and for storing/keeping track of administration. It also provides regular training. The system is beneficial for people in the collection countries as Closing the Loop provides jobs and reduces the amount of toxic waste which ends up in landfills.
The carbon footprint of transporting the e-waste to Europe is considerably less than mining virgin materials would be, and the service promotes the circular economy in a strategic, resource-intensive sector.
The One for One service is transparent and traceable. Companies can use it to appeal to customers and to improve their sustainability credentials.
