10% of hospital waste consists of plastic materials and about half of them are made of PVC. This includes medical devices such as urine bags, dialysis bags, surgical suction liners, tubes, drip bags, face masks and nasal cannulas. In countries such as Australia and New Zealand, all hospitals are able to recycle these devices with the help of organisations such as VinylPlus and RecoMed. In Europe however, these materials are incinerated.

The patented CleanBags machine empties and internally disinfects the bags used in healthcare facilities in 10 seconds. Once treated, the bags can be recycled. Alongside these machines, TecnoTrust has filed the following patent: "Disinfection method of the ground product of medical devices produced in plastic material and machinery for their recycling". TecnoTrust has also patented the "Method of disinfection of the ground product of medical devices produced in plastic material and machinery for their recycling".

  • The disinfectant used is chlorhexidine digluconate which has a broad spectrum of action, meaning that it acts on bacteria and viruses, even COVID-19. Sars-CoV-2 RNA in urine has been found to be infectious (The Lancet Infections Diseases - National Center for Global Health) so use of this disinfectant in CleanBags machines is important.
