Mamukko: making bags from old sails and life rafts
Mamukko is an Irish company, founded in 2011, that uses waste nautical materials as a secondary raw material. They promote upcycling by using end-of-life sails, decommissioned life rafts and recycled leather to make bags.
Each one of their products is unique, boutique-manufactured in their workshop in Kinsale. Moreover, their batches are limited by the amount and type of fabric they have in stock.
Mamukko has won several awards for their circular work in Ireland, such as:
- Best Upscaled Fashion Product Retailer
- Excellence Award for Sustainable Fashion Accessories
- Irish Enterprise Awards
- Culture Trip Local Favourite Award
- Winner “Institute of Designers in Ireland Design Awards”, category “Design Sustainability”.
