Description

NoPalm Ingredients aims to provide an alternative to palm oil for the food and beauty industries. Demand for this oil is rising, but it is responsible for mass deforestation and biodiversity loss. New EU regulations will force European companies to source sustainably certified palm oil – which is not exactly abundant.

This Dutch company is therefore producing local, circular and high-quality oils and fats from renewable sources.

Agri-food side streams like potato peels and rejected vegetables are turned into a fermentable substrate, yeast is added triggering fermentation where oils are stored within the yeast, then the oils and fats are extracted. The remaining biomass is returned to the value chain.

They have proven the technology at industrial scale and are now working on a demo factory. They aim to build a global network of on-site facilities where fermentation vessels are set up close to feedstocks. This will enable the initiative to scale up quickly.

The company markets two REVÓLEO™ products:

  • REVÓLEO™ for Food is a semi solid fat which can replace other fats entirely. It is suitable for use in baked goods, chocolate, and plant-based meat and dairy products.

  • REVÓLEO™ for Beauty is a quick absorbing emollient. It can be used in skin and hair care products, cosmetics and soaps.

Main results
  • Achieves 90% less carbon emissions and 99% less land use compared to conventional palm oil.

  • Employs more than 30 people and is already processing at industrial scale.

  • Improves supply chain transparency and enables cleaner label and ethical products.

  • Upcycled ingredients and zero-waste approach.
