Description: 

The ValueWaste project aims to develop an integrated system for urban biowaste valorisation at two very different European locations, the city of Murcia (ES) and the city of Kalundborg (DK), covering the whole value chain: citizens, local authorities, waste managers and biobased industries.

3 technical lines are being developed, using urban biowaste for the production of food and feed ingredients, and fertilisers in a cascading process, thus generating economic, social and environmental benefits:

  • Value Chain 1: Pilot plant of methanotrophic bacteria fed by biomethane, producing every year 80 tons of biomass to be fractionated into 4 main products: protein, peptides, fat and nucleic acids.
  • Value Chain 2: Pilot plant of black soldier fly farming, resulting in an annual production of 15 tons of dry larvae, which means around 6 tons of meal flour with high protein content. Implemented at waste management site in Murcia.
  • Value Chain 3: Pilot plant of nutrients recovery from the liquor after digestate dewatering, with the final production of 0.12 kg of struvite and 1 kg of ammonium sulfate every hour implemented at waste management site in Murcia.

 

Main results: 

The main expected results of the ValueWaste project are as follows:

  • Valorisation of 1,800 tonnes/year of urban biowaste in Murcia (Spain)
  • Production of 60 tonnes/year of sustainable protein and valuable nutrients recovered from residual streams, thus contributing to EU self-sufficiency on strategic resources
  • Improvement of citizens' perception on urban biowaste as local source of valuable materials
  • Demonstration of end-user products applications and new market opportunities
  • Development of new business and organisational models for biowaste valorisation
  • Development of recommendations for future large urban biowaste valorising plants
  • Provision of scientific and experienced-based data which will contribute to new standardisation and policy.
