Description

Carbon Expert is a consultancy firm that helps companies prove that their business model is sustainable and meets certification criteria. The companies can then generate funding via Voluntary Carbon Certificates.

They help green companies get funding via the voluntary carbon market. It's rather like a matchmaking service: they link up sellers with buyers. Unlike the EU emissions trading system, the voluntary carbon market is – rather obviously – voluntary. It covers a range of green projects which reduce or remove GHG emissions or CO2 from the atmosphere. The projects are certified by various bodies and the project developers can then sell the credits to companies looking to offset their own emissions or simply help the planet.

They measure companies' carbon footprints and help them develop decarbonisation strategies. They cover Scopes 1 to 3 and use GHG Protocol standards, ISO 14064 and ISO 14067. This enables companies to identify their environmental impact and set ambitious yet achievable reduction goals.

Carbon Expert then assists companies with achieving Gold Standard Foundation (GSF) certification for their projects, in areas such as recycling, biogas, compost and producing organic fertilisers from composted animal manure. Once they're certified, the companies are issued carbon credits by GSF. They can then sell their carbon credits to other companies and use the resulting funds to extend their projects. So, they're the sellers.

On the other side, we have the buyers. Carbon Expert provides a list of GSF-certified companies in Romania, Germany and the US which can be supported by other companies around the world via Voluntary Carbon Certificates.

Main results

The voluntary carbon market can generate funding for green projects, but it can be difficult for companies to break into it. Carbon Expert helps them do so, enabling them to expand circular projects such as recycling and renewable energy facilities.
