Description

CirkArena is an R&D centre (fully operational in 2028) for the circular economy which brings together scientific and innovation teams and capacities.

It is built on a broad partnership of research and educational institutions and the public sector and aims to contribute to the transformation of the Moravian-Silesian region. It serves as a bridge between technological and knowledge-based resources, helping to accelerate R&D activities, innovation and education in the field of the circular economy. The project is part of the broader SMARt And Green District (SMARAGD) strategy, which offers the region a comprehensive solution to societal challenges in materials, energy, environment and IT.  It is co-funded by the EU.

The centre's area of interest is waste research: industrial waste (emphasis on mining and metallurgical waste, as this industry used to be part of the local economy), biowaste and construction waste.

The project contributes to the region’s transformation by maximizing the use of secondary raw materials, promoting sustainability, modernising businesses and linking up industrial sectors. This leads to a reduction in waste and supports the circular economy and industrial symbiosis.

Main results
  • The main goal of CirkArena is to transform the region into a model of sustainable development, focusing on research and the efficient use of construction materials, biowaste and industrial waste, such as slags and dust - the remnants of heavy industry. The centre's R&D results will support the regional innovation ecosystem.
  • The centre has also set up the Technology Platform in response to the challenges facing the entire plastics chain (production, processing and recycling). Experts are available to answer questions on legislation and financial issues.
