CityLoops: promoting circularity in the CDW and biowaste sectors
CityLoops (Closing the loop for urban material flows) was a Horizon 2020 project which focused on circular economy solutions for bio-waste and construction and demolition waste (CDW).
Seven European cities (Apeldoorn (NL), Bodø (NO), Høje-Taastrup & Roskilde (DK), Mikkeli (FI), Porto (PT) and Seville (ES) piloted a series of circular economy actions tackling construction and demolition waste, including soil, and bio-waste with the aim of achieving material circularity. The cities implemented ten demonstration actions and tested over 30 new tools and processes.
The project website has sections on CDW, bio-waste and circularity in cities. There is a huge amount of information available: the tools are given along with replication packages and a summary of lessons learned. The project was very keen to ensure that their tools can be rolled out elsewhere as easily as possible.
The CDW section covers:
- Planning and decision-making
- Stakeholder engagement
- Circular demolition
- Data and material passports
- Material banks and marketplaces
- Recycling concrete
- Circular soil handling
- Circular procurement
- Business cases
The bio-waste section covers:
- Bio-waste prevention
- Bio-waste collection
- Bio-waste valorisation
- Enablers
The circularity in cities section covers:
- What can cities do?
- Measuring city circularity
- Circular procurement
- Replication & exploitation of results
- Stakeholder engagement
- Business cases
