Cities and regions have the opportunity to see the COVID-19 crisis as a wake-up call to move to more sustainable living environments. Transitioning to a circular economy (CE) can reduce the vulnerability of economic and social systems.
This transition requires multi-level governance and actors: local and regional authorities (LRAs) play a key role in this context. Many LRAs are pioneers in the field of circularity and represent a reservoir of best practices, while many others still face different kinds of barriers.
The 16th meeting of the Technical Platform for Cooperation on the Environment, jointly run by Commission's DG ENV and CoR, aims to:
- provide a forum for policy makers and stakeholders to exchange ideas on how can LRAs benefit from the transition to the circular economy in the post-crisis recovery context
- enable the sharing of best practices
- contribute to identify the barriers local and regional levels face in transitioning to the CE
- discuss the tools and initiatives at EU level aimed to support LRAs in the transition to a CE, as well as identify the gaps.
